3 Ways To Improve Your Wellness Post-Retirement

Happy Elderly Couple

Between retirement savings accounts and health insurance options, most people spend significant time and energy setting themselves up for a comfortable life after retirement. The caveat, here, is that most people fail to plan for wellness post-retirement ﹣ an essential component of both physical, mental, and financial wellbeing.

Ready to start planning for wellness, but not sure where to start? Here are three easy steps to starting your post-retirement journey off on the right foot.

Don’t over-indulge right out of the gate

You’ve worked so hard to get to retirement, so when the time comes, you’re likely ready to let loose. Of course, you should give yourself a grace period post-retirement, however, many people lose sight of this grace period and start to form unhealthy habits that impact long-term health. Set a period of time in your mind to celebrate retirement, and then commit to creating and maintaining healthy habits. After all, wellness is a marathon, not a sprint.

Keep your days structured

No, structure doesn’t directly impact health, however, structure makes it easier to make consistent wellness choices, allowing us to form good health habits over time. Forming these habits on the front end allows those entering retirement to take control of their health before it becomes a problem.

For instance, consider snacking. Do you snack when you’re bored? If you’re like most, the answer is yes. The sudden lack of structure experienced in post-retirement often leads to boredom, which as we all know, leads to unnecessary snacking.

Monitor your hormone levels

Around the age of retirement, the human body undergoes changes in hormonal levels that may affect overall health and wellbeing. While moderate, age-related hormone changes are normal, many post-retirement adults experience hormonal imbalances outside of the optimal scope. For example, it’s common for estrogen and testosterone levels to decrease with age, resulting in symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, sex drive, and imbalanced mood and stress levels.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, we recommend booking a consultation with a specialist such as Inspire Medical and Wellness.
